If You Could Do Anything

October 1, 2009
1. Joy, 2. day three hundred and seventeen

I have been on a major kick of trying to figure out what my passion is and what excites me in order to live the life of my dreams. Throughout this process, I’ve leaned fairly heavily on some wonderful personal development blogs. One of the exercises I found extremely helpful was to answer this question, “If I could do absolutely anything, what would I do?”

I would:
  • start a stationery line.
  • design accessories.
  • open up the shop my bestie Natasha and I have daydreamed about.
  • attend every Li Edelkoort presentation. Ever.
  • travel. travel. travel to hawaii, london, siem reap, tokyo, agra fort, bombay, south africa, mexico, paris, morocco.
  • go to SXSW every year, including the panels.
  • scout, recruit, hire, help, collaborate with and connect hip, indie, young, emerging &/or inspiring designers.
  • meet gala darling.
  • live out loud, authentically, happily and beautifully.

What does your list look like? I’d love to hear what you would do.

The aforementioned personal development blogs that I find inspirational: The Art of Nonconformity, Christine Kane’s Blog, Steve Pavlina, Icing by Gala Darling, Makeunder My Life, Nubby Twiglet* & White Hot Truth.

*perhaps not personal development, but a wonderful resource for graphic designers.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately too. I think I would be an herbalist or a librarian and I would have a letter press shop on the side. Or a lithography studio but thats huge and I can't house huge.

    The best part? Totally possible.

I say travel. I love to travel and see the world. I have seen Taj Mahal and it's majestic. Travel! Travel! Travel! But, I also want to open a flower shop :)

I've been on the same kind of kick of late. My list would be:

    1. Become properly versed in metalsmithing and become a jewelry designer.
    2. Travel, travel, travel.
    3. Learn more languages, and perfect the ones I already know.
    4. Become really dedicated to my yoga practice and develop one of those amazing yoga backs.
    5. In general be healthier.
    6. Stop being so afraid of things and just let go and have fun and take more risks.

I think that last one pretty much sums it up. If I can get over my fear of taking risks, then I can totally achieve the rest.

Mags – Insanely doable. And it makes perfect sense to me that you would have a letterpress shop!

My Owl Barn- I've been to Mumbai, but didn't make it to the Taj. I hear it's amazing. And, open that flower shop!

    Thank you, Simplesong!

Lauri – glad you liked the links! I'm obsessed!

Mary Jo- I'm with you! Travel is so eye-opening and refreshing. Great for creatives!

Musie- mmm, yoga. Feels so good but I've been away so long. Isn't Li just the most inspired, amazing woman? I always feel so ALIVE after seeing her presentations. Take small risks to build up to the big ones – the more you have under your belt, the more comfortable you'll become!
